Thorpe Garden Wedding Photographer
Part of the Cripps and Co series of venues, which includes the likes of Hazel Gap Barn, Thorpe Garden is a new venue and one of my favourites. Here’s what I loved about photographing a wedding at Thorpe Garden in Staffordshire.
The Grounds at Thorpe Garden
The most striking thing about the venue is the grounds – they are both emorous and immaculate. It’s a giant walled garden and it provides an exclusive space for wedding celebrations. That was my first impression when I scouted the venue before heading over to see the bride, where I was impressed yet again by the space.
Wonderful Bride Prep Space at Thorpe Garden
How many times have I rocked up to bride prep and found the space just plain bad to shoot in? Tiny space, awful lighting. At Thorpe Garden is the bride’s prep space is exceptional. The space is large and bright, and there are plenty of mirrors, making the environment perfect for a large bridal party.
Photographing the Ceremony at Thorpe Garden
I liked that couples can get married outside in various locations if they choose. You have a choice of being on the front lawn just outside the venue, or you can do it inside the venue. Amber and Joe chose to get married inside the yurt. I don’t think there is another yurt wedding venue in the Midlands, and as a wedding photographer near Nottingham who’s shot at around 80 different wedding venues, I should know!
Getting married in a yurt is great because the light in the venue is very even, making it a very flattering space to shoot in, so wherever I choose to be to get a particular shot, the light is good. The yurt can hold up to 100 guests, which makes it a great venue for large weddings.
Wedding Reception Photography at Thorpe Garden
As a wedding photographer, I enjoyed the reception space at Thorpe Garden because of the spacious grounds, perfect for playing a bit of swing ball and for capturing relaxed photos of the newlyweds.
As for the wedding breakfast area, owing to the large window, the area is flooded with natural light, making the area very flattering to shoot in. One of the best things is that I can get behind the top table so that I can shoot guests and the speaker in the same frame, which is great for storytelling. Also, because the guests’ tables are in rows, I can shoot from very close to the top table to get the best shots without being in the way of the guests. The payoff of the table set up is that it is much easier to get better shots quickly and unobtrusively, which is what I’m all about as a documentary wedding photographer.
