5 tips on dressing for your engagement shoot in the East Midlands
1) Wear what you feel most comfortable in
Choose to wear the clothes that you feel your best in.
I know what its like I’ve had photo shoots done in the past. You might be thinking ‘I need to wear something that will make me look the bomb!’
Avoid wearing something just because you think that it will look good on camera. Your East Midlands engagement shoot is about capturing you and your personalities. It’s not a fashion shoot for a magazine. If you begin to feel self-conscious that will translate into you feeling awkward in front of the camera.
Make sure that what you wear makes you feel confident- and confidence is where it’s at and it will breathe life into your photos!
Basically, don’t over think it. Just wear what you would normally wear when you’re hanging together! So for me I’d defiantly wear my Metallica t-shirt 🙂
2) Choose clothes that complement each other
Once you’ve chosen a top and bottom that pair perfectly together you’ll both look rockin’! But, take some time to make sure that there are no clashes of colours and patterns between the two of you. The focus of the shoot should be on you and not what you are wearing.
If your husband-to-be is wearing a shirt/ top with a busy or bold pattern you should probably wear something more mellow. Otherwise it will be totally cringe… (you know what I’m talking about right?)
Similarly, try to wear complementary colours- that’s colours that totally jam together, like blues and yellows/ oranges or reds and greens, purples and yellows.
If you want to geek-out about this there’s a colour theory. I know there’s a theory for everything, you can check it out here I’ve added a colour chart below as a rough guide to help you find colours that work well together too.
Try out a few different items together before the shoot to make sure that you’re on the same page. When in doubt, stick to neutrals or cool or pastel shades that layer harmoniously.
But, avoid looking overly staged- it should fit with what you normally wear. Please don’t feel the need to buy anything just for the shoot, unless you want to treat yourself…
3) Mix it up
Avoid wearing matching colours to each other – its SO boring! Just because you want to wear your favourite blue dress doesn’t mean your man has to wear a blue top. When there’s too much of one hue going on, its not very interesting- everything sort of blends together. You still want to find your East Midlands engagement photos interesting in 5-years time, so wear complimentary colours and patterns instead.
4) Don’t be afraid to wear bright colours or prints
Go on, embrace the bold prints and the bright colours if that’s you! But if one of you rocks an eye-catching colour or bold pattern the other should wear clothing that doesn’t clash with it. You want effortless co-ordination. (oooh, I like that phrase, its like ballet or something!).
5) Keep the season in mind
Do you normally dress up like you are heading to a party when you are going for a romantic walk in the park, in winter?
Dress for the season. Sounds obvious but it always surprises me what I see other couples trying to make work online, like wearing a summer dress on a snow capped mountain. You might have seen some of those crazily cheesy photos too?
If you desire your East Midlands engagement photos to take place during a particular season, let’s arrange for then. If not, embrace the season, your cosy coat and hat are fine, it just looks weird if the environment and the wardrobe don’t mesh. (Oh, and come prepared just in case the sky decides it’s time to rain).
