‘It looks like they’re dancing with the lights on!’ said one of my Brides in a recent call. She hated the fact that so many professional wedding photographers dance floor photos just look so boring.
My approach to photographing the dance floor at weddings is unlike other photographers because I don’t use flash. This allows me to get in on the action and capture the vibe, making your party photos feel like your in the party!
When flash is added into the mix, the burst of light makes it very easy for cameras to acquire focus because they can ‘see’. I guess that’s why a lot of photographers capture the dance floor in this way – a blurry photo is not much use to anyone!
So why would I make life difficult by basically shooting in the dark?
The simple answer is flash completely KILLS the mood! All the ambient, colourful light from strobes will be drowned out by the flash and every photo will have uniform lighting which looks pretty boring after a while.
The dance floor is full of energy and madness and I want my couples photos to feel that way.

Here’s one where I had to work in a different way. Sometimes the scene is just too dark. This one was taken in a barn that was only lit with fairy lights and a few lamps! But I didn’t let using the flash kill the energy. Just used it as a chance to add some light trails for some extra vibes.
