What to wear on your family photoshoot- 5 Tips
You’ve booked a family photography session, or maybe you just want to try taking better photos of your family following the tips I shared here, it’s only natural to ask ‘what should we wear for our family photos?’ I know you’ll want your family to look and to feel their best, so I’ve put together some tips on what to wear for your family photoshoot.
1) Have your children wear what they feel comfortable in
Choose clothes for your children that they would normally wear.
Please don’t feel the need to buy anything just for the shoot, unless you want to treat yourself…
Family photo shoots in Nottingham are about capturing your family’s personalities. It’s not a fashion shoot for a magazine so just take it easy.
Children don’t really feel self-conscious because they are not dress sense aware, (of course they will have their favourites, I know mine do), so this next part applies to you as a parent.
Parents, make sure you wear clothes that make you feel great. This will help you to feel less self-conscious and it will make you feel more camera confident.
Basically, don’t over think it. Just wear what you would normally wear when you’re hanging out together!
2) Choose clothes that complement each other
Take some time to make sure that there are no obvious clashes of colours and patterns between each of you. The focus of the shoot should be on your family and not what you are wearing. Clothes that clash will steal the attention.
Wear complementary colours, like blues and yellows/ oranges or reds and greens, purples and yellows.
If your girls are wearing dresses it’s OK to have one dress that’s patterned, but two patterned dresses side by side is a little busy – same thing for boys and stripy tops.
Your family photos will look so much better if you’ve given some forethought into how you will incorporate your chosen colours into everyone’s clothing in a subtle way.
3) Avoid wearing Anything with logos or graphics.
Have your children wear simple clothes – tops with massive prints and logos on the front just draw far too much attention. No one wants to read what’s on your top!
4) Don’t be matchy matchy!
To avoid looking staged- don’t all wear white tops and blue jeans for example, because it totally cringe-worthy! You know what I’m taking about because you are now picturing those studio family portraits that you hate 🙂
5) Dress for the season
Most shoots take place in the autumn/ winter in the run-up to Christmas. Families want to end their year with some lovely family photos because they realise they’re reaching the end of the year and they don’t have any!
Children are a bit magic in that they don’t feel the cold like we do in winter, but still wrap them up warm. They can always take off layers as the shoot goes on. The worse thing is, if your child gets cold it’s pretty much shoot over because they will have a hard time getting warm again and they will be upset!
