I love this photo because it’s not your typical wedding image. It’s quirky and humorous and it has an interesting symmetry to it.
In this video, I describe my thought process behind the photo and how I captured it.
I had to wait for what felt like a while to capture this, but I had the time because it was a tiny wedding and I had to work extra hard to create something interesting when not a lot was going on around me.
Displayed on the wall in the reception space were two giant portraits. You couldn’t miss them in the room and I had thought earlier that I wanted to incorporate them into a photo at some point. While guests were eating some of the evening food I noticed that two of the guests were sitting under the portraits and I thought that the man, who was having a conversation with another guest (outside of the frame), had to make a similar gesture to the portrait hanging above him at some point. Then I just kept shooting and making slight adjustments to my framing while I waited for the man to mirror the portrait and then BOOM, the bride’s mother entered the frame, with a slightly bemused look on her face, the frame and everything lined up!
This photo is an example of how having the patience to pursue an idea can pay off.
